A delivery driver has been left in critical condition after being run over by his own van, police said.

The 49-year-old man was delivering parcels to a house in Newbiggin, Northumberland, when another man climbed in his van before hitting him with the blue Citroen Berlingo and driving away.

Northumbria Police were called to the crash around 2.45pm on Monday.

Two men, aged 18 and 27, have been arrested and remain in custody.

Police believe the suspects may have been in the area before the crash, and have asked anyone with information to come forward.

The delivery driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said he was in a critical but stable condition.

Efforts are ongoing to trace the van.
