A murder investigation has been launched after a man was killed in Croydon, with police reporting the victim had stab wounds and head injuries.  

Police attended a flat in Hampton House, in Coulsdon on Friday evening, and a 59-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.  

A man was arrested near the scene on suspicion of murder.

Councillor Mario Creatura tweeted a message of support: “Sad to report that a murder investigation has been launched following an incident on Reddown Road in #Coulsdon last night. 

"Our thoughts are with the community during this distressing time - and thanks to the emergency services for their endless support. ”

Charles King, 71, Chair of the East Coulsden Residents Association told The Independent: "All of the residents are incredibly shocked to hear this devastating news. 

"It’s normally a very quiet area and it’s shocked us all. We were out last night and didn’t know what to think when we came home and saw the police and the road blocked off.

"Our sympathies are with the victim’s family and we are pleased with the way the police have dealt with the situation so quickly.

“Nobody ever expects something like this to happen where they live, and we are all still in shock.”

Croydon South MP Chris Philp urged any witnesses to come forward and said: “Last night’s murder in Coulsdon is shocking news. My thoughts are  with the family. Please can anyone with information or who witnessed this please contact the Police urgently. Coulsdon is generally a peaceful area, and an arrest has been made.”
