Chess prodigy's mother held

The mother of the late chess prodigy Jessica Gilbert was arrested on suspicion of threatening to kill her ex-husband after he was acquitted of raping their daughter last week.

Jessica, 19, died after falling from an eighth-floor hotel room window in the Czech Republic in July during a chess tournament.

Surrey Police confirmed yesterday that they had arrested Angela Gilbert, 53, last Thursday at her home in Reigate after she made an emotional statement saying her daughter's life was destroyed by "the evil acts of one man". She was held for almost 16 hours before the Crown Prosecution Service decided not to proceed with the case.

Royal Bank of Scotland director Ian Gilbert, 49, walked free last Thursday, from Guildford Crown Court where he stood trial on five counts of raping Jessica while she was a child, and six further sexual offences against others.
