Five men have been arrested in connection with the death of a 10-year-old boy after an alleged hit-and-run crash.

Sean Hamilton, from York, was killed after he was hit by a Ford Transit van while crossing a road on Saturday evening.

A card was attached to a lampost from his mum, dad, Kerry-Ann and Stephanie yesterday that read: "Sean. You will always be with us. Our hearts are broken. God wanted an angel, and as usual you were at the front of the queue. All our love, kisses and cuddles."

Another card, signed from Auntie Jackie, Pye, Stewart and Kylie, read: "God obviously needed an angel so he chose you. You're one special little man and you are going to be sadly missed." A stuffed toy, a packet of M&Ms and a bag of Monster Munch crisps were also left.

North Yorkshire police said that the van stopped after hitting the boy but the occupants ran off. Sean Hamilton was treated by paramedics at the scene but was later pronounced dead at York District Hospital. The men being questioned by police, aged between 16 and 22 and from the York area, have been bailed.

In tribute, friends Dalton and Jordan wrote: "Sean, we was best friends for ages. We will miss you so much mate. We will never forget you Sean because all the funny things at school and getting into trouble all the time."

Another card from Sash, Nathan, Dev and Carol read: "We will miss you Sean, God Bless!"
