Body of 14-year-old boy discovered on beach in Wales

The boy's 15-year-old friend is still missing after a trip to the seaside ended in tragedy

The body of a 14-year-old boy who went missing while swimming in the sea with his friend has been found five days later.

Yahye Omar Mohamed was discovered lifeless on a beach in north Wales and his body was identified by family members.

His friend, Waseem Muflahi, was still missing and emergency and rescue services were continuing to look for the 15-year-old in the area.

Andy McGregor, a police inspector with North Wales Police, said: "Yahye was identified by family members and our thoughts are very much with them at this time.

"They are being supported by specialist Family Liaison Officers and we hope you can respect the family's privacy at this very difficult time."

Yahye, from Birmingham, was reported missing while on a trip with his friend Waseem to the holiday resort of Barmouth on 7 August.

The pair had travelled to the beauty spot as part of a cohort of around 500 people from Birmingham's Yemeni and Somali communities.

His body was discovered on the Sunny Sands beach in Gwynedd at 11.35am on Friday. The death is not being treated as suspicious and the coroner has been informed.

An extensive air, land and sea search coordinated by the UK Coastguard was called off on 9 August pending further information, but a more limited search for Waseem was continuing.
