A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was stabbed to death in southwest London.

The unnamed woman, thought to be in her 30s, was pronounced dead at a home in Battersea at 1.41pm on Wednesday, the Metropolitan Police said.

A 40-year-old man was arrested at the property in Grayshott Road, roughly a 15-minute walk from Clapham Junction train station.

Police officers were called to the home at 12.38pm to a report of a stabbing.

London Ambulance Service paramedics and London’s air ambulance also attended.

A police spokeswoman said: “Formal identification awaits and a post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

“The homicide and major crime command have been informed. Enquiries are ongoing.

“At this stage, police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this investigation.”

It is the 90th homicide investigation launched in the capital this year.

The quiet tree-lined Victorian terrace was cordoned off as forensic officers combed the home for evidence.

Police officers told residents that "it's not gang-related".

More than 50 people have been killed by stabbing in London this year.

In the year to March, knife crime offences rose by 16 per cent across England and Wales, and the total of more than 40,000 knife offences was the highest number since 2010-11.

Anyone with information about the Grayshott Road stabbing should call the Met on 101, citing the reference number CAD 3183/15Aug, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
