The body of a newborn baby was found at a railway station today.

Police said the infant was discovered at Fleet station in north Hampshire by a cleaner at 11.30am.

A spokesman said an investigation has been launched to find out how the body came to be at the station. Inquiries are also being made to find the mother and officers urged her to come forward.

Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen something at the station to contact them.

Local sources said the baby boy was found in a bag on one of the platforms.

Train services are not affected by the discovery, but part of the station front is cordoned off while police examine the scene.
