Ashes to be scattered in secret

Myra Hindley's body is likely to be cremated in Cambridge and her ashes scattered at a secret location due to fears that a grave might become a tourist attraction.

Funeral arrangements have not been finalised, police said yesterday, and Hindley's body will not be taken to the crematorium "in the near future".

The body of the 60-year-old Moors murderer will remain at West Suffolk hospital mortuary in Bury St Edmunds pending an inquest at Highpoint prison at 3pm tomorrow.

A post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday, and the body was under police guard to prevent souvenir hunters taking photographs.

Cremation plans have already been drawn up in accordance with Hindley's wishes, police said, but the arrangements have to be finalised with her relatives, including her elderly mother Nellie, 79, who lives in a Manchester nursing home.

"We will be liaising with a number of agencies including Highpoint prison, Suffolk police and the coroner regarding the funeral arrangements of Myra Hindley," a spokeswoman for Cambridgeshire police said.

Few mourners are likely to be present at the funeral, which will take place amid tight security.

Hindley is said to have drawn up a list of the mourners. These include her mother, who is herself in poor health, her niece, Sharon Scott, and a handful of supporters including Nina Wilde, who was reported to have had a lesbian affair with Hindley at Cookham Wood prison in Kent.
