Monday 14 January 2002 01:00 GMT

Stuart Goddard, better known as pop star Adam Ant, has been charged with assault and possession of a firearm or imitation firearm after an alleged incident at a north London pub.

The star, who had hits in the early Eighties with 'Stand and Deliver' and 'Prince Charming' was arrested on Saturday night, but has now been released.

According to the Sun newspaper, the alleged incident occured when Goddard was refused entry to a private party and threatened to open fire.

According to the 37-year-old singer's official website, the gun was not real, but a replica, and the charges "are not as severe [as] they seem".
