Police have offered a £10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the gunman who murdered a retired Army officer on his doorstep.

Police have offered a £10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the gunman who murdered a retired Army officer on his doorstep.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert "Riley" Workman was shot dead at his home in Furneux Pelham, Hertfordshire, in January. Detective Superintendent Adrian Tapp, who is leading the investigation, announced the Crimestoppers reward yesterday and said detectives believed the killer might have held "a deep-seated grudge".

"We have taken advice from [behavioural] profilers and this case has been presented to a convention of European profilers," said Det Supt Tapp. "And it is their view that the motive for this murder could be a deep-seated and long-held grudge."

He added: "Although he was generally a liked person, it seems not everyone thought that way about him."

Detectives appealed for anyone who had known 83-year-old Col Workman to come forward. Det Supt Tapp said: "We've made good progress so far establishing the main chapters of Riley's life and the investigation team is following up many lines of inquiry which have been generated from the meticulous work already conducted. However, there are still details that we don't know and that's where we need the public's help.

"The investigation team has spoken to many of Riley's close friends and family from as far back as his childhood and army days, but we still need to hear from anyone who knew him, even if they don't think their acquaintance is relevant."
