The incident occurred at the Mayflower Hotel in Kensington on Monday afternoon.
Marcos Cervera and his friend Esteban Garcia, both originally from Spain, arrived in London on Saturday.
Cervera was pronounced dead at the scene, while Garcia was taken to the hospital for immediate treatment.
“Police were called at 13:48hrs on Monday, 5 March to a hotel in Trebovir Road, Kensington following reports of a male found deceased and another person taken ill,” a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Service confirmed to The Independent.
“Officers attended with London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade colleagues also in attendance.
“A male was pronounced dead at the scene.
“At this early stage, the death is being treated as unexplained.
“Another male in his 30s has been taken to hospital where he remains in critical condition.
“An investigation is being undertaken by Kensington & Chelsea CID in conjunction with the Environmental Health department.
“Initial tests indicated a high reading of carbon monoxide, though the investigation has not yet concluded.
“The hotel was evacuated and remains closed while the investigation continues. The scene has now been made safe.”
A friend of the pair expressed his concern on Facebook over their wellbeing earlier today, before news of Cervera’s death was made public.
“We’re are trying to look for our friend Marcos Cervera Menéndez,” the friend wrote on Facebook.
“He arrived London last Saturday, and we have been notified that there has been a carbon monoxide leak in his hotel.
“The person he was travelling with is admitted to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
“Friends from London, we need to get information. We are very worried. Thank you very much."
