More than 52 milliion single records were sold in Britain last year, a higher per capita rate than any other country. British sales of 0.98 singles for every person were well ahead of second-placed Japan which averaged 0.71, according to the Music Business International report. Combined sales of albums and singles were worth 1.53 billion pounds in 1991, putting Britain in fourth place in the global table of sales reciepts.
