Shephard lecture

Gillian Shephard, Education and Employment Secretary, will be guest speaker at the Association of Women Barristers' annual dinner at Lincoln's Inn Old Hall on Wednesday 14 February.

Immigration Bill rethink

Lawyers and personnel directors are calling for a rethink of the proposal in the Immigration Bill to make it a criminal offence to employ a person who is not entitled to work in the UK.

Julia Onslow-Cole, a partner at the City firm Cameron Markby Hewitt and a member of the Law Society's sub-committee on immigration, said the Law Society felt the legislation before Parliament was unworkable. She criticised the Confederation of British Industry and other employer representatives for giving in so soon on an issue that could lead to companies or individuals being fined pounds 5,000.

Butterworth deal

Butterworth & Co has signed a deal with the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for Northern Ireland to take over the publication of the Northern Ireland Law Reports.
