The Army's new Challenger 2 tank being put through its paces on the Lulworth ranges, Dorset, yesterday. The 60-ton tank, which enters service with the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards in 1995, has a top speed of 40mph and can destroy enemy tanks more than two miles away. Earlier this week, Oman signed a pounds 140m contract with Vickers, the manufacturers, for 18 Challenger 2s and other vehicles. Sir Colin Chandler, Vickers' chief executive, said he had high hopes that Saudi Arabia would also place orders for the tank.
