From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Six in 10 (61%) people have already started planning overseas trips for 2023, according to research.

This is a higher proportion than last year, when half (50%) of people were planning their 2022 trips, American Express found.

The findings, released as Britain is blanketed in snow, indicate a quarter (25%) of holidaymakers have booked at least one element of their trip, such as flights, transport or accommodation.

More than a quarter (27%) of people planning 2023 getaways said they want to have something to look forward to in the colder months.

And more than a third (36%) said they are planning ahead to avoid trips getting booked up by the time they try to book.

A quarter (25%) said they are booking holidays to catch up on those missed during the coronavirus pandemic, while the same proportion (25%) are trying to take advantage of holiday firms’ pre-Christmas offers.

Beach holidays topped the list of holiday types for 2023 (44%), followed by city breaks (37%).

Spain remains the most popular holiday destination for those heading overseas, American Express found.

For those choosing to stay in the UK next year, the Lake District was found to be the most popular destination, followed by Cornwall, London and Wales.

Nikki Edelman, vice-president at American Express, said: “With the new year on the horizon, many of us are planning trips away in 2023, booking in advance to secure deals on transport and accommodation.”

Some 2,000 people were surveyed across the UK between October 28 and November 1.
