From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A 29-YEAR-OLD man shot in the head and killed as he celebrated at a nightclub in the early hours of Christmas Day was named by police yesterday as Jason Hill, from Anstey, Leicester.

A second man was shot in the stomach and managed to take a taxi to hospital where his wounds were treated.

His condition was described as "stable" by staff at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Police launched a murder investigation and the Eden club in Halford Street, Leicester where the shootings took place was sealed off.

No further details of the dead or injured man have yet been released by police.

A spokeswoman for Leicestershire police said: "Last night a 27 and 22- year-old man were arrested on suspicion of murder. They are currently in custody and are being interviewed."

Detective Superintendent Mick Creedon, of Leicestershire CID, who is leading the investigation, said: "It is vital that we identify and trace every person who was in the Eden club and might have vital information. This is a very serious incident and we are urging anyone who was in the club to make contact with police as soon as possible."

It is thought there were around 100 people seeing in Christmas at the club at the time of the shooting.
