From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Helena Bonham Carter (pictured right), Dame Judi Dench and Kate Winslet have all been shortlisted in the prestigious Golden Globe awards, it was announced yesterday.

Bonham Carter has already won three trophies for her performance as Kate Croy in The Wings of the Dove, while Dame Judi has been shortlisted for (Her Majesty) Mrs Brown in which she plays Queen Victoria. Winslet, who was Oscar-nominated for Sense and Sensibility, has been shortlisted for Titanic, which has picked up eight nominations in all.

The trio dominate the best dramatic actress category but will face competition from Jodie Foster in Contact and Jessica Lange for A Thousand Acres.

Bonham Carter said last night that she was delighted to be nominated but wary about raising her hopes. "My fingers are crossed for the Oscar nominations, but there is a lot of expectation about it and you just have to keep relatively calm," she said. "I'm going to be a complete wreck by Christmas. For someone who hasn't had many award until this week, it is quite a nice habit to be developing." She has been chosen as best actress by the National Board of Review, the Los Angeles Film Critics and the Boston Film Critics.

The awards, which are regarded as the best barometer for the Oscars, will be presented on 18 January.
