Manchester City last night went three points clear of neighbours Manchester United – who face Newcastle tonight – at the top of the Premier League after defeating Liverpool 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium. A long range Sergio Aguero effort, plus a Yaya Touré header put City 2-0 up after 33 minutes. James Milner completed the scoring with a penalty shortly after Gareth Barry was dismissed for two yellow cards. Liverpool were without Luis Suarez after the club decided not to appeal his eight-game ban for racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra. However, the club released a statement yesterday stating their belief that Suarez was innocent. Suarez also released a strongly worded statement. MORE
Defoe goal enough to see off Baggies
Jermain Defoe scored the only goal of the game as Tottenham opened up a five-point lead in third place. It was a typical strike for the forward, who turned and shot past Ben Foster after good work from Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart. MORE
