Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Jagielka injury may force Terry to face Spain
Fabio Capello may have to pick John Terry, his captain who faces allegations of racism, against Spain after it emerged Phil Jagielka will have to pull out of the England squad tomorrow. The Everton defender has a hairline fracture to a toe which has required pain-killing injections, and will probably report for duty, be examined by the medical staff and sent home. Jagielka's absence leaves Capello with four fit centre-backs, including John Terry and Phil Jones, whom he had hoped to field elsewhere. This may jeopardise Capello's plan to rest Terry against Spain and only play him against Sweden. Although the decision was made "for football reasons" unrelated to the racism allegations Terry faces, it would have taken him out of the spotlight. England will be based in the Polish city of Krakow for next summer's European Championship. The Football Association is keen for England to "embrace and engage with" local culture and history; a stark change from the isolated South African base for the 2012 World Cup. MORE
