Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Opinion: James Lawton

Solid Spurs hold off Milan to progress
A brave defensive performance from Tottenham Hotspur saw them progress into the quarterfinals of the Champions League for the first time, as they drew 0-0 with Milan at White Hart Lane. After an even start, the Italian side came to dominate the first half, thanks to the passing of Clarence Seedorf from deep and the intelligent movement of Alexandre Pato up front. Their best chance came when William Gallas had to clear a deflected Robinho shot off the line after Heurelho Gomes had come too far from his line. The Brazilian goalkeeper also had to make saves from his compatriots Pato and Robinho. Spurs’ best chances came thanks to Peter Crouch’s height: he put one header wide, while Rafael van der Vaart nearly scored from a knock-downs. As the game went on Milan struggled to break down Spurs’ excellent defence, well marshalled by Gallas and Michael Dawson. MORE
