Own-goal gives Sunderland share of derby day spoils

A late own-goal by Demba Ba handed Sunderland a point at the Stadium of Light yesterday as they drew 1-1 with Newcastle. Yohan Cabaye put the visiting side ahead before Ba deflected John O'Shea's header into his own net. Newcastle had been reduced to 10 men inside half an hour after Cheick Tioté was sent off, which left manager Alan Pardew perplexed.

"I was surprised to see the red," he said. "It would have been one of the greatest ever victories if we had held on but we tired and couldn't keep the ball." The match was marred by Sunderland fans' chants of "We wish you were dead" towards Newcastle's Steven Taylor. "If that is what they were singing it would be in very poor taste," Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill said. "If I had heard that I would have been disappointed."

The day's other match also ended 1-1, Everton holding on at QPR after Steven Pienaar was dismissed. Junior Hoilett put the hosts ahead before Sylvain Distin's header went in off Julio César. MORE
