Jenson Button won last night’s Canadian Grand Prix, overtaking Sebastian Vettel on the final lap after a race disrupted by rain. There was a two-hour stoppage after 25 laps, but Vettel looked safe in the lead after the restart until Button caught him.
Stoner climbs to top after victory
Casey Stoner moved ahead of Jorge Lorenzo to top the riders’ standings yesterday after winning the British MotoGP at Silverstone. Starting on pole, Stoner held off the challenge of Andrea Dovizioso to win by 15.159sec in the heavy rain. MORE
Talks to begin over fans’ group funds
Discussions between the Premier League and Supporters Direct (SD) will take places this week regarding possibly restoring funding to SD. The group’s CEO Dave Boyle had made offensive comments on Twitter which led to the initial sanction. MORE
RFU: Woodward must be full-time
Martyn Thomas, the Rugby Football Union chairman, yesterday ruled out Sir Clive Woodward returning on a part-time basis, and insisted the new man needs to be fully focused. “We need a man who is 100 per cent committed,” Thomas said. MORE
Welbeck snatches point for England
England’s European Under-21 Championship campaign began last night with a 1-1 draw against Spain. Ander Herrera put Spain in front in the first half but, with three minutes left, Danny Welbeck spun sharply and equalised from close range.
England Saxons prevail over Tonga
Rory Clegg kicked 16 points as England Saxons beat Tonga 41-14 yesterday to reach the Churchill Cup final, where they will face Canada. Jordan Crane touched down and team-mate Billy Twelvetrees also scored to help the Saxons triumph. MORE

McLeish walks out on Birmingham
Alex McLeish resigned as the manager of Birmingham City yesterday, on a day of managerial movement in English football. McLeish quit Birmingham via an email, according to a club statement. By resigning he has forfeited the pay-off to which he would be entitled and so there is little doubt that he has another job to go to. He has been linked with the managerial vacancy at Aston Villa, but might be unpopular with their supporters. He won the League Cup this season but months later was relegated. In other managerial news, Steve McClaren has replaced the sacked Billy Davies as manager of Championship side Nottingham Forest. McClaren returns to English football having managed in the Netherlands and Germany since his sacking as England coach in 2007. MORE
United to finalise £16.5m Jones deal
Manchester United are close to confirming finally the signing of Blackburn’s Phil Jones for £16.5m. United have refused to let Rovers raise the price for the centre-half and, after warding off a late bid by Liverpool, Jones is expected to join the club imminently. MORE
Baltacha wins title in Nottingham
British No 1 Elena Baltacha won the biggest domestic title of her career yesterday. She beat the Czech Republic’s Petra Cetkovska 7-5, 6-3 in the Aegon Challenge in Nottingham. “It’s great to win a title this big, especially playing at home,” she said. MORE
