Stuart Broad gave England the advantage on the opening day of the first Test at Lord's against West Indies yesterday, leaving the tourists already facing an uphill task to rescue the match. The 25-year-old took six wickets – his fifth Test haul of five or more – to reduce the visitors to 243-9 at the close. Only veteran batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul provided any sort of resistance for the tourists, remaining unbeaten on 87.
Put into bat by the hosts, West Indies lost two quick wickets to James Anderson, Kieran Powell and Kirk Edwards falling to the bowler who now sits equal fourth in Test wickets at Lord's. The loss of Adrian Barath left the score at 86-3 and signalled the entrance of Chanderpaul. The 37-year-old's measured display, which took him to ninth in the all-time Test scoring list, helped the tourists see out the day, his best partnership was 81 with Marlon Samuels. MORE
