Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Manchester United's struggles continued last night as they went down to a third consecutive defeat with a 2-1 loss at Sunderland in the first leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final.
Ryan Giggs put through his own net on the stroke of half-time to open the scoring for Gus Poyet's side, before Nemanja Vidic headed in an equaliser for United shortly after the break.
Fabio Borini, on loan from Liverpool, restored Sunderland's lead from the spot after Tom Cleverley brought down Adam Johnson, giving Sunderland the advantage to take to Old Trafford for the second leg a fortnight tonight.
"It is difficult. We just need to keep going," United manager David Moyes said. "We didn't do a lot wrong. I thought the referee was going to blow in our direction for the first goal. I couldn't believe he gave a free-kick. It was a terrible decision."
Poyet admitted his side may have been fortunate. "It was a very tight game, sometimes a decision goes for you," he said. "It's not easy to beat United but we go to Old Trafford with a lead. It's been a long time since we were in a final so we will try our best." MORE
