Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Manchester United's quest to reclaim the Premier League title got off to a losing start last night when Everton deservedly beat them 1-0 at Goodison Park in their opening match of the season. Marouane Fellaini's header from a Darron Gibson corner after 57 minutes was enough for Everton to record an impressive victory. Fellaini had been a handful all night, winning every ball that was sent forward towards him, and the Belgium international was a constant worry for the make-shift United defensive partnership of Nemanja Vidic and Michael Carrick. Robin Van Persie came off the bench after 68 minutes to make his Manchester United debut, but could make no impact on the game. "It was a great start," the Everton captain Phil Neville said afterwards. "We don't normally start the season well." Neville was quick to praise the goalscorer's dominating performance. "When Fellaini plays like that, he's unplayable. He's such an awkward player to play against." MORE
