Cole surprise at Wembley ovation as England draw

England captain Ashley Cole admitted he was surprised with the positive reception he received from the Wembley crowd during his side’s 1-1 draw with Republic of Ireland last night.

Cole, who was named as the fourth different England skipper of Roy Hodgson’s tenure, was given a standing ovation as he was substituted for Leighton Baines in the second half.

“I never expected to get 100 caps and have the reception I did,” he said. “I’d like to thank the fans, I didn’t expect that. It’s something I’ll never forget.

“I had no problems with being captain. I don’t always like talking to the press but I’ve lived a little boy’s dream today.”

England fell behind to Shane Long’s fine header in the first half, but Frank Lampard continued his fine goal scoring form of late for his 30th international strike. Hodgson, whose side face Brazil on Sunday, was pleased with the performance.

“The important victories have to come in the qualifiers,” said Hodgson. “But I’m certainly more happy now than I was before the game.” MORE
