The owner of Manchester United, Malcolm Glazer, passed away last night, at the age of 86, although the club’s immediate future remains secure. The American businessman, (right) who had been in failing health since 2006 after suffering two strokes, also owned American Football outfit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and transformed the NFL side from a laughing stock to SuperBowl winners in 2003.
The Glazer family brought the Old Trafford club for £790m in 2005, amid raucous opposition from supporters as the takeover was financed using loans against the club’s assets. A breakaway club, FC United, was formed by supporters unhappy at the sale. The Glazers currently own 90 per cent of the club, with Malcolm’s sons, Joel and Avram, co-chairmen at Old Trafford.
“The thoughts of everyone at United are with the family,” the club said. United enjoyed good fortune on the pitch during his tenure, winning five Premier League titles, three League Cups and the Champions League - all under Sir Alex Ferguson. The Scot’s successor, David Moyes struggled to maintain that form, and Louis van Gaal was announced as his successor last week. MORE
Wilshere: 4-2-3-1 suits our game

Williams sisters crash out in Paris
Defending champion Serena Williams crashed out of the French Open in the second round yesterday, losing 6-2 6-2 to Spaniard Garbine Muguruza. Her sister, Venus, also exited at Roland Garros in Paris, going out in three sets to the Slovakian Anna Schmiedlova. MORE

Heather Watson faces a tough challenge in the second round of the French Open today when she takes on fourth seed Simona Halep. The Romanian has enjoyed a remarkable rise in fortunes since her Paris exit last year, rising from 57th to fourth in the world rankings. MORE
