Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Make it funky, Van Gaal orders DJ Young

Ashley Young is in charge of the playlist in the Manchester United dressing room... but is under instruction from Louis van Gaal to play only funky house. Since Patrice Evra left for Juventus, Young has become the resident DJ at the club, but Van Gaal, 63, has strict guidelines. “I’ve been told by the manager I can only play funky house or house music,” Young told MUTV. “Seriously, that’s what he likes.”

Cut leg rules out Phillips’ horse

Zara Phillips saw her hopes of success at the Rolex Kentucky three-day event disappear in frustrating fashion last night. The Queen’s granddaughter withdrew before a scheduled dressage test at Kentucky Horse Park when High Kingdom suffered a cut leg after kicking out when being tacked up in his stable. The decision was taken to withdraw him in the horse’s best interests.

Woods confirms return to Players

Tiger Woods has added next month’s Players Championship to his schedule after missing last year’s event following back surgery. The 39-year-old, who tied for 17th at the Masters, won the Players the last time he entered, in 2013. He is ranked No 106 in the world and did not qualify for next week’s Match Play Championship in San Francisco.

Hamilton retains pole in rich list

Lewis Hamilton remains the richest British sportsman, with a fortune of £88m, but Wayne Rooney (£72m) has overtaken Jenson Button (£71m) in second in the 2015 Sunday Times Sport Rich List. Andy Murray is fourth, with £48m, ahead of Rio Ferdinand (£44m) and Steven Gerrard (£42m). Basketball player Luol Deng is level with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho (£40m).

Hartlepool alerted over Marley stunt

Equality campaigners Kick It Out have warned Hartlepool fans over a Bob Marley-themed fancy-dress day planned for next week’s trip to Carlisle. The anti-racism body has acted on complaints from some Hartlepool fans and urged Carlisle to turn away fans who “black up”. The face painting has historically been a way of acting out racist stereotypes and is likely to cause offence, Kick It Out said.
