Atletico seal victory over Reid’s Mumbai

Atletico de Kolkata earned a 3-0 win over Mumbai City, managed by former England player Peter Reid, in the inaugural match of the Indian Super League yesterday.

Ethiopian striker Fikru Teferra put the hosts ahead, with Spanish duo Borja Fernandez (right) and Arnal Llibert adding goals to ensure a comfortable win.

Kolkata, partly owned by Atletico Madrid, dominated the match throughout and could have scored more.

Mumbai failed to impress in the absence of injured Freddie Ljungberg and Nicolas Anelka, who is serving a ban for his controversial “quenelle” goal celebration.

Lennon named Bolton manager

Championship strugglers Bolton yesterday appointed former Celtic manager Neil Lennon as their new manager on a four-year contract. The 43-year-old Northern Irishman, who joins the club after four seasons in charge of Celtic, will be joined by assistant manager Johan Mjällby and first-team coach Garry Parker. Lennon succeeds Dougie Freedman at Bolton, who left the club earlier this month.

Federer secures Shanghai Masters

Roger Federer won his first Shanghai Masters title with a 7-6, 7-6 victory over Gilles Simon. The Swiss will today replace Rafael Nadal at No 2 in the world rankings, and will go to London next month hoping to win the year-end title for the seventh time at the World Tour Finals.

Bale to face Cyprus despite back injury

Gareth Bale is ready to play through the pain barrier when Wales face Cyprus tonight. The 25-year-old Real Madrid star has been nursing a back problem picked up in Friday night’s goalless draw against Bosnia.

Wales manager Chris Coleman said: “We gave him treatment, he had a bit of strapping on his back, but he’s fine. He has said he wants to play for us, even if he has had a niggle.”

Berahino: U21s are steeled for abuse

Saido Berahino says England’s Under-21s are prepared for potential racial intimidation as they fly out to the Balkans focused on clinching qualification for the European Championship finals. England are 2-1 up ahead of tomorrow’s play-off tie in Croatia, two years after suffering abuse in Serbia. “If [racist abuse] does happen we have had discussions and we know how to deal with it,” said Berahino.
