Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Angelique Kerber won six of the last seven games to rally past Madison Keys and win the Family Circle Cup. The 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 victory gave Kerber (above) a fourth WTA title and first since Linz in 2013. She broke serve five times against an opponent who had not dropped serve all week. Kerber trailed 4-1 in the final set, with American Keys displaying a strong serve. The German won 12 of the next 16 to tie the match. Keys moved in front once more at 5-4 before Kerber took control for good.
Flying finish but no final Wiggins win
Sir Bradley Wiggins’ career with Team Sky ended with two blazing attacks in the closing kilometres of Paris-Roubaix, which – even though they did not succeed – saw him bow out from top-level road-racing with an 18th-place finish. Luke Rowe was the first Briton home with a notable eighth place. The race briefly veered close to disaster when a group of riders ignored a gendarme’s order to stop at a slowly closing train barrier.
Holders Arsenal knocked out of Cup
Arsenal’s defence of the FA Women’s Cup came to an end in the quarter-finals yesterday as they were beaten 2-1 at home by Chelsea. Former Gunners Katie Chapman and Gemma Davison put the Super League leaders in command before Emma Mitchell gave the hosts hope. Manchester City, Everton and Notts County join Chelsea in the last four.
Fit-again Moeen ready for England
Moeen Ali could find himself flying out to the West Indies on England duty this week after scoring 62 as Worcestershire reached 264 for 8 against Yorkshire. The opener suffered a side strain during the World Cup but put on a partnership of 118 with Tom Fell. Four of Yorkshire’s six seamers took wickets. Durham veteran Paul Collingwood took 5 for 57 to help reduce Somerset from 224 for 2 to 299 all out at Taunton.
Diamond sees red over green referees
Sale’s director of rugby, Steve Diamond, criticised the officials after his side’s 25-23 defeat at London Irish, believing Andrew Fenby was offside before scoring. “There were six experienced referees officiating in the Championship yesterday,” he said. “Too often our club are given inexperienced referees.” Defeat allowed Wasps to open up a five-point gap after their 40-13 win over relegated London Welsh.
