David Cameron has called Hassan Rouhani to discuss Iran’s nuclear programme, becoming the first UK Prime Minister in more than a decade to call an Iranian leader. A spokesman said both leaders “agreed significant progress had been made in the Geneva negotiations” and it was important to seize the opportunity presented by the further round of talks which begin today.
Hospitals must be open over blunders
Hospitals that withhold information on blunders could be liable to pay some of the damages and even lose their insurance cover, under plans to improve patient safety. Jeremy Hunt proposed the move as part of the response to Robert Francis’s report on the Mid Staffordshire scandal. MORE
Two die after roof collapses in mall
A roof at a shopping mall near Durban that was under construction collapsed yesterday, killing two people and injuring 29 as survivors screamed for help. Rescue teams used cranes, sniffer dogs and spotlights as the search for any more survivors stretched into the night.
‘Bloody cyclists’ tweeter is fined
A woman who tweeted about “bloody cyclists” hours after knocking a man off his bike was yesterday convicted at Norwich Magistrates’ Court for failing to stop and report an accident. Emma Way, 22, was fined and given seven points on her licence. MORE

A city-wide manhunt has intensified in Paris to try and track down the man who opened fire at the offices of the Libération newspaper on Monday, seriously wounding a photographer. Despite the deployment of extra police units and helicopters, nobody has been arrested. MORE

BBC Radio 1 presenter Greg James gave career advice to students at his old school on Monday, as part of the i’s Back to School Campaign. The 27-year-old spoke to sixth formers at Bishop’s Stortford High School in Hertfordshire.
Pilot appeals against fine for pulling plane
A pilot who landed his light aircraft on a rural motorway in Pennsylvania when its propeller fell off has launched an appeal against a $3,000 fine he received for towing his aircraft off the roadway. He said such fees could cause other pilots to seek out more dangerous emergency landing options.
Football fan finishes ‘96 with player hunt
A man who found a 1996 Premier League sticker album with six spaces empty tracked down the players and took their pictures. Adam Carroll-Smith found Gary Penrice (QPR), Keith Curle (Man City), Philippe Albert (Newcastle), Scott Minto (Chelsea), and Lars Bohinen and Stuart Ripley (Blackburn Rovers).
Divorcee sells rings for football tickets
Divorced? Spare old wedding ring? Swap it for sports tickets. A Kansas City woman has exchanged her old rings for tickets to see her beloved American football team, the Kansas City Chiefs, play. The woman posted an ad on Craiglist which attracted another fan who was looking for an engagement ring for his girlfriend.
No takers for pair of dinosaur fossils
Two dinosaur fossils which appear locked in mortal combat have failed to sell at a New York auction. A pre-sale estimate predicted the skeletons could fetch between $7m and $9m, but they did not make the reserve.
