Experts predict that the terrorist attack on a Nairobi mall will cost Kenya's economy up to £154m in lost revenue from tourism. Moody's Investors Service and the World Travel and Tourism Council said the Islamic extremist assault which killed at least 67 people at Westgate Mall on 21 September could slow growth of Kenya's GDP by 0.5 per cent.

Legionnaires warning on compost
Gardeners have been warned to wear gloves when handling compost and avoid breathing in the dust, which could contain Legionnaires disease. Scientists discovered the bacteria in 14 of the 22 brands of potting soil available in Britain, although most of the strains were not a risk to humans.
Dead boy's mother says she was abused

Torture is widespread in Libyan jails since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime in late 2011, say UN investigators. The office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Support Mission in Libya said it is rampant in jails run by militias who triumphed in the civil war.

Lostprophets split as singer faces trial

Jellyfish shut down nuclear reactor
A huge cluster of jellyfish has forced one of the world's largest nuclear reactors to shut down – a phenomenon marine biologists say could become more common. Operators of the Oskarshamn nuclear plant in Sweden had to close a reactor after jellyfish clogged the cooling pipes.

The number of rhinos killed by poachers has hit a new annual record in South Africa, raising worries of a downward population spiral. As of the end of September, 704 rhinos had been killed by poachers in South Africa.

Anger as election results are delayed
Guinea's electoral commission said it could be days before results are available from the nation's first legislative elections in more than a decade, drawing criticism from the opposition. Results had been expected yesterday, or 72 hours after Saturday's vote.
