More than a ton of ivory worth $1.1m (£700,000) has disappeared from a government vault in Uganda, police said yesterday. A corruption watchdog has launched an inquiry over the missing tusks, asking why so much ivory was amassed, among other questions.
Family sees killer’s house knocked down
The parents of April Jones, the five-year-old was killed and abducted in October 2012, watched the demolition yesterday of the cottage where Mark Bridger is thought to have killed their daughter. Mrs Jones said: “It’s a dreadful thing that happened here. It will not be a final closure.”
Hammer attack man is jailed for 18 years
The man who attacked three sisters with a hammer in a London hotel room has been jailed for a minimum of 18 years. Philip Spence, 33, from Harlesdon, denied the attempted murder of the three women from the United Arab Emirates but admitted to the attack.

‘All child services must be reviewed’
MPs have called for child protection to be reviewed following evidence of widespread organised abuse in England after the Rotherham scandal. Chairman Clive Betts said: “Repeated Ofsted inspections in Rotherham failed to lift the lid on the council’s shameful inability to tackle child sexual exploitation.” Ofsted said they welcomed the opportunity to give evidence to the committee.
Bathroom products linked to cancer risk
A study on mice has found that an antibacterial ingredient found in kitchen and bathroom products has been found to trigger liver cancer in them. Professor Robert Tukey said the triclosan’s “increasingly broad use in products may present a very real risk of liver toxicity”.
Body parts found in US-bound packages
Five human parts, including an infant’s head and an adult heart, have been discovered in Bangkok by a parcel delivery company in packages bound for the US. The body parts, it had been claimed, had been taken from a hospital. The sender was an American tourist, police say.
Who me? I had no chance, says Capaldi
Peter Capaldi, the actor playing Doctor Who, has revealed that he turned down an audition for the role in the 1996 movie, believing he did not have a chance. “I knew I wouldn’t get it – I loved the show so much that I didn’t want to have anything to do with it unless it was going to be me,” said the actor.
Suits you sir – host wore outfit for a year
Karl Stefanovic wore the same blue suit every day for a year on Channel Nine’s Today programme. And no one noticed until he went public with his experiment. Hesaid that while no one asked about his suit, people regularly commented about and criticised the outfits worn by co-host Lisa Wilkinson.

Department store Fortnum & Mason will launch the world’s first Scottish tea – a white tea and smoked white tea – retailing at £200 per 100g. Tam O’Brann, who runs the plantation in Perthshire, said: “This is a far more subtle tea to bring out on special occasions.”
