Editors reject any statutory code

Fleet Street editors have agreed to accept virtually all Lord Justice Leveson's proposals for creating an independent self-regulatory body for the press. However, the summit rejected the notion that the standards code of the new system should be taken out of the hands of editors, as well as the involvement of Ofcom or any statutory body. MORE

May granted right to appeal Qatada ruling

The Home Secretary, Theresa May, has been granted permission to appeal against the decision allowing radical preacher Abu Qatada to stay in the UK. Qatada's deportation to Jordan was blocked last month over fears that evidence obtained through torture would be used against him.

Stuart Hall charged with assault on girls

Veteran broadcaster Stuart Hall was last night charged with three counts of indecent assault on girls aged nine to 16. The 82-year-old football correspondent for BBC Radio 5 Live was arrested at his home. The offences are alleged to have occurred between 1974 and 1984. MORE

Mother beat son to death over Koran

A mother has been found guilty of murdering her seven-year-old son. Sara Ege, 33, beat Yaseen to death and then set fire to his body at their Cardiff home when he failed to memorise passages of the Koran. The father was acquitted of causing his death by failing to protect him.

Parenthood leads to longer life

Having children can lengthen your life, a new study claims. Of 21,000 couples treated at IVF clinics in Denmark, researchers found that those who were unsuccessful didn't live as long, and the death rate from disease and accidents was four times higher among childless women.

Kraftwerk to play Tate Modern

London's Tate Modern will open its doors to electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk next year for a series of gigs. The German group will perform their first shows in the city since 2004 in the Turbine Hall.

Morsi accused of 'vicious attack'

Supporters of President Mohammed Morsi clashed with his opponents outside the presidential palace in Cairo yesterday. They pelted each other with firebombs as the political crisis deepened. Mohamed ElBaradei, a reform advocate, accused Morsi's supporters of a "vicious" attack against peaceful demonstrators.

Typhoon death toll approaches 300

The death toll from the typhoon that hit the southern Philippines has soared to almost 300. Yesterday parents searched through mud-stained bodies in an attempt to find their lost children. Officials fear more bodies may be found as rescuers reach hard-hit areas that were isolated by landslides and floods.

Skyfall has surpassed Avatar to become the highest-grossing film at the UK box office. The James Bond epic took just 40 days to amass £94m, and raked in more than £540m worldwide. MORE

Sacre bleu! Chateau is razed in mix-up

An 18th-century chateau has been bulldozed by mistake in a Bordeaux village. Workers in Yvrac were hired to renovate the manor and raze a small building on the estate, but got the two mixed up. "The Chateau de Bellevue was Yvrac's pride and joy," said former owner Juliette Marmie. "The whole village is in shock."

Netflix has right to stream Disney films

The video streaming service Netflix has acquired the rights to Walt Disney films in a deal that executives have described as a "game changer" for the future of movies. The deal puts Netflix into competition with giants of US pay-TV. Prior to the deal, Netflix could only stream films from independent studios.

Three male inmates in a Puerto Rican prison have been allowed to use Twitter to deter others from committing violent crimes. The programme is dubbed "Follow me so you don't follow me." Their account is called "follow2unfollow".

Exiled Hamas head returns to Gaza

The exiled political leader of Hamas will get a hero's welcome when he arrives in Gaza this week. Khaled Meshaal will make his first visit to the Palestinian territories for 45 years to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Islamic Resistance Movement.
