Anger at minister’s food bank stance
Charities and politicians have reacted with anger to a claim by the Employment minister that the drastic increase in the number of people using food banks has nothing to do with the Government’s welfare reforms. Britons told to leave amid terror threat
Britain and the US warned of potential terrorist attacks in Kenya and British citizens were urged immediately to leave the port city of Mombasa following a series of attacks. The warnings, issued on Tuesday and yesterday, may further damage Kenya’s tourism sector.
Drug ‘can help those with Alzheimer’s’
A widely used antidepressant can reduce levels of a brain-clogging protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease, research has shown. Scientists say it is too early to recommend the drug to Alzheimer’s patients, but the build-up of “plaque” in the brain is associated with symptoms of the disease.

The trial of Oscar Pistorius has been postponed after the trial judge ordered the Olympic athlete to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. It could take 30 days, inevitably delaying any verdict. MORE
Chickens’ great escape ends on M62
A lorry carrying thousands of chickens crashed into a safety barrier on the M62 yesterday. About 2,000 chickens “escaped on to the carriageway” and had to be recaptured, said Michael Clarke, from the Highways Agency. A further 1,500 were killed from the impact of the crash or hit by cars while making a break. MORE
Magazine ‘illegally tracked royals’
Danish police said yesterday they are widening an investigation into two former reporters and the publisher of a local gossip magazine, suspected of violating privacy laws by illegally accessing information – including credit card transactions – that enabled them to track Danish royals and celebrities for several years.
