HBOS chiefs ‘should be banned from City’

The former HBOS executive Sir James Crosby has quit his job as an adviser to a private equity firm amid calls for him to be banned from working in the City. There were also calls for Sir James to be stripped of his knighthood, and for his colleagues Andy Hornby and Lord Stevenson to be banned from working in the Square Mile, following a damning report into the bank’s collapse. Two arrested on suspicion of murder

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a teenager was shot in the chest in north London. Mohammed Hussein, 19, died in Edmonton on Monday after neighbours heard shouting and gunfire. Natneal Tefsay, 20, from Bounds Green, was charged with murder yesterday. Police said they had also arrested a 19-year-old man.

UK to become wheat importer again

Britain is to start importing more wheat than it exports for the first time in a decade after a year of disastrous weather. The National Farmers Union warned that the cold weather had ruined harvests across the UK at a cost of half a billion pounds. The country will now have to boost wheat imports by more than a million tonnes.

Concerns raised over care homes

A study of a TripAdvisor-style site which lets users review care providers has revealed people’s overwhelming concern for the treatment of their elderly relatives. Almost three-quarters of negative reviews on the site directed towards care provided by homecare agencies and care homes. However, the quality of care children receive was rated highly.

Acid-attack victim steps up campaign

A victim of an acid attack has told of her determination to ensure that similar violence is not carried out on other young girls. Chanchal Paswan is one of an estimated 1,000 people thought to be disfigured every year in the country by acid thrown at their faces, and the government has faced demands to strengthen the law. MORE

Obama says sorry for ‘sexist’ remarks

President Barack Obama phoned California’s Attorney General to apologise after complimenting her appearance at a party fundraiser with comments since branded sexist. Obama told an audience in San Francisco that Kamala Harris was “by far, the best-looking attorney general in the country”.

Brit wins council election in Kansas

The British winner of a city council seat in a small town in Kansas won’t be able to take office until he becomes a US citizen. Although Adam Baker, 32, told fellow residents of Lucas about his problematic citizenship status, 62 people wrote his name on the ballot, giving him three more votes than the incumbent.

School’s first mixed prom wins support

A campaign by four teenagers in rural Georgia to organise the first ever racially integrated students’ dance at their high school has found support from around the world with almost $15,000 of donations. Student Keela Bloodworth, of Wilcox County High, has attracted 13,000 likes on her event’s Facebook page.

Telegraph readers oust MacKenzie

Kelvin MacKenzie’s apparent new career as columnist on the Daily Telegraph website is over inside one week. Sources at the paper said the former editor of The Sun would not be continuing to write for the broadsheet after readers said the publication had “dumbed down” and turned itself into “fish and chip paper”.

Mr and Mrs Craig to betray one another

Daniel Craig and his wife Rachel Weisz, below, are teaming up on stage to play a married couple in a Broadway revival of Harold Pinter’s play Betrayal about adultery, directed by Mike Nichols. The James Bond actor last appeared on the New York stage in 2009 with Hugh Jackman but it will be a Broadway debut for Weisz.
