‘Revenge porn’ sees first jail sentence

A 21-year-old WhatsApp user is believed to have become the first person in the UK to be jailed for posting “revenge porn” online. Luke King, of Aspley, Nottingham, was jailed for 12 weeks after he uploaded intimate photographs of a woman on to the internet in August.

Wonga banished from children’s kit

Payday lender Wonga has removed its logo from Newcastle United’s children’s sportswear ahead of the 2016/17 season. The decision followed a review held by chairman Andy Haste. He aims to ensure the company does not inadvertently appeal to the young or vulnerable.

BBC DJ Denning admits sex abuse

Former Radio 1 DJ Chris Denning has admitted a total of 41 sex offence charges against young boys between 1967 and 1987. Denning, 73, pleaded guilty to 10 charges of indecent assault on a male, one of gross indecency and one of indecency with a child at Southwark Crown Court. He will be sentenced on 9 December.

President of Algeria taken to hospital

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who suffered a stroke last year, was hospitalised in the Alpine city of Grenoble on Thursday, a French police source said yesterday. “He was taken into care at Grenoble Mutualist Clinic,” the source told Reuters.

Obama to push for immigration reform

President Barack Obama has said he will push on with his immigration reforms. The plans would protect around five million immigrants from deportation. Immigration is the first big issue between Obama and the new Republican-majority Congress after the midterm elections.

Israel bars trauma surgeon from Gaza

A Norwegian surgeon who criticised Israel while working in Gaza during the last conflict there has been barred from the territory. Dr Mads Gilbert said he did not know how long the ban would last; he tried to enter Gaza last month, via Israel, and was told he was barred for “security reasons”.

Tremor kills three coal miners

An official says a powerful tremor has killed three men working in a coal mine. A spokesman for the OKD mining company says the miners died yesterday, some 3,000ft below the surface at a mine in Karvina, 200 miles east of Prague. Nine other miners were rescued.

Hop, skip and jump to save comet lander

As the power on the Philae comet probe runs out, scientists are considering “hopping” it to a sunnier spot. The lander, which was released by the Rosetta orbiter on Wednesday, bounced on landing into the shadow of a cliff and cannot recharge using its solar panels.

Uganda priest’s body found in mass grave

The body of a Roman Catholic priest from Uganda who went missing in south-western Mexico has been found in a mass grave as authorities search for the remains of 43 missing trainee teachers feared massacred. The remains of the priest, missing since May, were dug up a week ago.

Leading research organisations have criticised the European Commission for ousting its top scientific adviser, Professor Anne Glover. In her three years in the newly created post, Professor Glover caused controversy by promoting genetically modified crops.

Toy tigers set loose to scare elephants

Indian farmers are using life-sized toy tigers in an attempt to keep wild elephants at bay. Farmers in the state of Tamil Nadu say that the technique works well to keep monkeys off their fields, according to the BBC, but that elephants are so far generally unbothered by them.

Bette Midler is to play her first UK tour for 35 years next year. The singer, comedian and actress, who has released a new album called It’s The Girls!, will play five arena shows, including the O2 in London, in July. Midler, 68, said: “I have always loved visiting and working in the UK.”
