Airport ‘dithering affecting recovery’

The delay in deciding how to expand the country’s airport capacity is undermining Britain’s economic recovery, two former trade ministers have warned. They say that more than 20 cities in rapidly growing countries are served from other European cities, but not London. MORE

Officer is killed in hit-and-run

A police officer has died in hospital two days after he was severely injured in a hit-and-run. Police Constable Andrew Duncan, 47, a married father-of-two, had tried to flag down a speeding car on Friday morning. A 25-year-old man is being held for suspected murder. MORE

Merkel celebrates historic election win

The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, and her supporters may be waking up with sore heads today after winning a historic third term last night. Her conservative Christian Democrats won 42 per cent of the vote but may have to enter into a coalition with the Social Democrats. MORE

Doing a ton: more drivers are 100-plus

Almost 200 drivers over the age of 100 are still legally allowed on the roads in the UK, according to figures from the RAC. It says the number of drivers over 70 has exceeded four million for the first time. The oldest man with a driving licence is 106. MORE

Bono defends U2’s tax arrangements

Bono, has defended the off-shore tax arrangements of U2, for which he has often been accused of hypocrisy. The singer said the arrangement was in “harmony” with the Irish government’s tax philosophy.

Swine flu may lead to universal vaccine

Scientists say the “Holy Grail” of a universal flu vaccine may have been discovered thanks to a “natural experiment” triggered by the swine flu pandemic of 2009. Imperial College London researchers say a vaccine that attacks the core of the virus – rather than the outside as at present – could protect against all current and new strains. MORE

Spurs to sponsor technical college

Tottenham Hotspur has become the first Premier League football club to sponsor one of the Government’s university technical colleges, which specialise in vocational education for teenagers. The North London club has received approval from the Education Secretary, Michael Gove, to set up the college on the site of its current stadium, White Hart Lane.

Court set to rule on Brotherhood’s status

Several Egyptian students were arrested yesterday as the start of a new academic year was marked by protests against the army-backed government and clashes between supporters and opponents of the deposed president Mohamed Morsi. A Cairo court is due to rule today whether Mr Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood should be dissolved, a verdict which could trigger more violence.

Lighthouse earns its stripes once again

Work is under way to repaint the red and white stripes on the Beachy Head lighthouse in East Sussex. A campaign backed by Eddie Izzard, John Craven and Bill Bryson raised more than £27,000 to pay for the revamp.

WikiLeaks leaks film script

WikiLeaks has leaked a version of the script for The Fifth Estate, a forthcoming film about the organisation, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange. It has criticised the production as “irresponsible”.

Swimmer says food is key to her success

Anna Wardley, 37, who swam solo around the Isle of Wight, has put her success down to eating rice pudding and Tunnock’s Teacakes every 30 mins during the attempt.

Dalí sketch for Wallis to be sold

A 1958 Salvador Dalí sketch drawn for Wallis Simpson, while they lunched together in New York, is set to go under the hammer in Derbyshire on Friday.
