Two senior dancers with the Royal Ballet are to boycott the company's first visit to Russia for more than a decade in protest at President Vladimir Putin's anti-gay legislation. The snub will embarrass Putin since Russia is considered the home of classical ballet. MORE

Renegade general bombs militants

An air force jet bombed positions held by Islamic militants in Benghazi yesterday, apparently as part of a renegade general's ongoing offensive. An official said the bombing targeted a base belonging to a local militia group called 17 February.

Police in new clashes with demonstrators

Fresh clashes broke out in the capital Ankara last night a day after unrest on the first anniversary of anti-government rallies. Police fired tear gas at protesters near where a demonstrator died last June. On Saturday, they used tear gas and water cannon on crowds in Ankara and Istanbul.

Bird man jailed for feeding pigeons

Campaigners have called for the release of a Morecambe man who was jailed for feeding pigeons. Lancaster magistrates jailed John Wilkinson, 65, for six weeks, after he repeatedly breached an Asbo forbidding him to feed the birds. MORE

Six schools in Birmingham are to be placed in special measures by Ofsted following allegations of a "Trojan Horse" takeover by Muslim hardliners. The inspectors will publish reports on 21 schools after allegations that they were being forced to adopt hardline Islamic practices. MORE

Some are 'frankly racist' minister says

Some people who raise concerns about immigration are "frankly racist", a Conservative minister said yesterday. In remarks which were immediately disowned by Downing Street, the Defence minister Anna Soubry said while most people understood that immigrants played a "hugely important" role in Britain, others had "prejudices." Freed soldier 'needs time to decompress'

The soldier freed from a five-year captivity in Afghanistan, Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, needs time to "decompress", his parents said yesterday. Bob and Jani Bergdahl also said they cannot wait to welcome him home. MORE
