Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Rumours that the top-selling pop band Take That were splitting up after one final tour reduced hordes of teenage girls to tears yesterday as their parents hoped that at least one craze might quietly die.

The four stars were to go their separate ways after five years together, seven number one singles and massive success, the reports said.

"The boys have always said they would go out on top, and that's exactly what they're doing," a senior music industry figure was quoted as saying.

The "completely unfounded" story was denied by the band's record company RCA, which was deluged by girls' telephone calls. Last year one member, Robbie Williams, 21, quit.

Today the band's remaining members - Gary Barlow, 25, Mark Owen, 24, Jason Orange, 25 and Howard Donald, 27 - are expected to make a statement on the affair in person at a secret location.
