Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Online dating website OkCupid has greatly expanded to members the options on gender and sexuality.

Previously OkCupid, which has more than 3.5 million users worldwide, only allowed users to declare themselves either male or female and chose from gay, straight or bisexual as their sexual orientation.

The dating site now offers users a fuller list of possible sexual orientations, including: asexual, demisexual, heteroflexible, homoflexible, pansexual, queer, questioning and sapiosexual (an individual who finds intelligence to be the most important sexual trait).

Users reported to NewNowNext.com being sent a message notifying them of the change: “You’re part of a select group with access to this feature,” it reads. “Keep in mind as we continue to work on this feature: For now, editing your gender and orientation is only supported on the desktop site.”

In addition, the gender options available have also been hugely expanded.

In addition to Woman or Man, users can choose from agender, androgynous, cis man, cis woman, genderfluid, gender nonconforming, hjra, intersex, trans man, trans woman and two spirit.

OkCupid has not yet confirmed whether these changes will be permanent or when they will be rolled out to all users.

The news comes amid recent changes on Facebook, which has also expanded its gender and gender-neutral family options.
