From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

At least 20 British football fans were injured last night after police opened fire with rubber bullets during clashes at the Champions League game between Manchester United and FC Porto in the Portuguese city of Oporto.

One fan had a rubber bullet lodged in his head, and seven others were also wounded, according to ambulance officials. At least three police officers were injured. Police opened fire to prevent United fans leaving the ground before the end of the European Cup quarter-final game after a group of fans ignored an order to remain in their seats and tried to force an exit door. Witnesses said police also used batons and tear-gas to force back the dozens of fans converging on the exit. There was trouble before the match too when around 200 United fans arrived at the ground with forged tickets for the match. Matthew Brace
