The witness was one of six or seven people who are said to have seen a suspect at a bus stop close to the scene of the murder, in Fulham, south- west London, on 26 April. It is understood the witness was identified when police talked to passengers on a Fulham bus yesterday.
Detectives hope to talk to the other people who had been waiting for the 26 April bus.
The discovery of the witness came during a police appeal at the scene of the crime. It followed a report by another witness that minutes after the murder, he saw a smartly dressed man sweating heavily at a bus stop close to Ms Dando's home, where she was shot in the head. He was said to have stood at the bus stop in Fulham Palace Road for several minutes until a 220 bus arrived.
Police yesterday interviewed passengers who got on and off at the stop, as well as boarding buses to distribute leaflets appealing for information. A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said last night: "Both pedestrians and people using the bus stop have come forward with information that will be investigated."
