Pet owners are more likely to insure their dogs than their cats.
Canines account for 60 per cent of all pet insurance policies, research by Datamonitor has found, compared with 15 per cent for felines. Horses and ponies fall in the middle, with a quarter of policies aimed at protecting them.
Although Britain is meant to be a nation of animal lovers, the figures show that fewer than one in 10 pets have insurance policies with a total of 168,072 cats, dogs and horses covered.
