From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. WWE wrestler Rhyno has failed to be voted into office as part of the US elections.

The Republican wrestler, who was born Terrance Guido Gerin but prefers to go by Rhyno, lost to Democrat Abdullah Hammoud, who is a 26-year-old health care consultant. The two contested an election for an open state House district in Dearborn, in Michigan.

The 41-year-old wrestler currently appears on World Wrestling Entertainment's 'Smackdown Live' programmes. But now he had looked also to serve in the Michigan Legislature.

HIs failure came despite the election of Donald Trump, who himself has experience in the WWE, having participated in fights before. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013.

Rhyno's campaign website says that Mr Gerin is a “politician by day” and a “professional wrestler by night.” He says he believes in limited government and will focus on fixing Michigan's crumbling roads and boosting state revenue-sharing to cities such as Dearborn.

He urged voters in the Democratic-heavy district east of Detroit to “be a Rhino-Democrat.”

Gerin would have been paid nearly $72,000 a year as a lawmaker.

Correction: An earlier version of this article reported that Rhyno had won election. That was based on wrong reports of voting numbers.
