From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. A woman has married a life-sized cardboard cut-out of Robert Pattinson in his Twilight role, demonstrating a commitment to the actor that is impressive, but mostly very frightening.

The wedding was held, unsurprisingly, at a chapel in Las Vegas. Lauren Adkins, 25, from Las Vegas, spent £2,000 on the ceremony, attended by 50 guests, before embarking on their presumably very quiet honeymoon to Los Angeles.

“I wanted us to climb up to the Hollywood sign together,” she said. “I had to carry him... but everyone makes sacrifices for the man they love, right?”

Her love for the actor developed after she read the Twilight series, becoming “obsessed” with fictional vampire Edward Cullen, who she describes as “quiet and mysterious, yet superhuman and invincible. And so sexy.”

Before long, cardboard Pattinson's textured otherworldly charm inspired Adkins to take the leap into marriage.

“People might think I’m crazy but my flat-pack R-Patz is the closest I’ll get to the real thing and he’s the one for me,” she told The Mirror. “A friend who thought I was going mad said one night: ‘If you love him so much, why don’t you marry him?’ Her words rang in my ears. She was right. Why didn’t I?”

The real Robert Pattinson currently stars in David Cronenberg’s film Maps to the Stars with Julianne Moore.
