The daughter of Olympic sprinter Tyson Gay has been fatally shot at a restaurant in Kentucky.
Trinity Gay, a 15-year-old promising hopeful on the track team, is said to have been shot in the neck while eating at a Cook Out branch in Lexington, Kentucky.
The Fayette County Coroner said Trinity Gay died of her injuries on Sunday just before 5am.
According to WKYT, a CBS-affiliated television station in Lexington, police in Lexington responded to a call that shots had been fired at the restaurant on South Broadway shortly before 4am.
The station reports that Trinity Gay, a rising star in the track team at Lafayette High School, was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to the neck.
Police say she was hit in the neck during an exchange of fire between two vehicles in a restaurant car park.
Gay expressed his shock at the news to local channel LEX18: “She didn’t make it. I’m so confused.”
“She was just here last week for fall break. It’s so crazy. I have no idea what happened”.
Commissioner of the Kentucky High School Athletics Association, Julian Tackett, voiced his shock on Twitter.
“Shocked to hear of death of Trinity Gay. A life of such potential cut so tragically short. Sympathies to Tyson and entire family,” he wrote.
Police have launched a murder investigation into the shooting and said they have detained two people for questioning but are still searching for the other vehicle.
