From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

American sport stars Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn have announced they are breaking up after nearly three years together.

The former couple revealed they had split in posts on Olympic skiing champion Vonn’s Facebook page and golfer Woods’ website.

“Lindsey and I have mutually decided to stop dating. I have great admiration, respect and love for Lindsey and I'll always cherish our time together,” Woods said.

“She has been amazing with [his children] Sam and Charlie and my entire family. Unfortunately, we lead very hectic lives and are both competing in demanding sports. It's difficult to spend time together.”

In her message, Vonn said she would “always cherish the memories that we've created together” and agreed that the decision had been mutual.

Her remarks echoed Woods’ comments. “Unfortunately, we both lead incredibly hectic lives that force us to spend a majority of our time apart. He and his beautiful family will always hold a special place in my heart,” she said.

In May last year, Woods’ ex-wife, Elin Nordegren, said she was still in therapy nearly four years after their divorce was finalised. The Swedish model and psychology student was left devastated after reports of Woods’ serial infidelities surfaced late in 2009.

However she added that her relationship with Woods was “really good”. They have joint custody of their children and live close to each other in southern Florida.
