From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The strange behaviour just keeps on coming with Shia LaBeouf.

For his latest trick, the Transformers actor demonstrated his patriotism during a visit to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial ahead of Independence Day by shouting “America” repeatedly at bemused passers-by.

The incident, which was inevitably captured on video and brought to the attention of TMZ almost immediately, shows LaBeouf topless once again as he walks through the streets.

It comes a day after the 29-year-old was filmed freestyle rapping to a group of young people, during which he declared himself “the best to do this since Tupac”. Hmmm.

LaBeouf announced his entire life was a work "performance art" in 2014 and attributed a number of strange events to this ongoing project. We can only presume his patriotic outburst falls under this category, too.

He is recovering from a hand injury he sustained during a stunt that went wrong for his new film, American Honey.
