Sarah Hyland has accused her ex-boyfriend, Matthew Prokop, of domestic abuse and has been granted a temporary restraining order against him.

The Modern Family actress claims that actor Prokop - who once appeared on the US television show - physically and verbally abused her over the course of their four-year relationship, according to court documents obtained filed by Hyland and obtained by TMZ.

Prokop's acting credits include High School Musical 3: Senior Year, Hannah Montana and Medium.

He allegedly threatened to set her house on fire and told her that she’d never see her dog again.

She alleges that Prokop pinned her against a car and choked her, following an argument they had over her outfit in May. He also called her a "c**t" repeatedly.

"His grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak. I was scared and in fear for my life," Hyland said in the documents of the altercation, which she claims left her with "a very sore throat".

The 23-year-old asked her on-screen mother, Julie Bowen, to help her "peacefully end" the relationship. The actress claims that she bought a flight ticket to send Prokop back to his home in Texas, but when he arrived at Hyland’s house and saw Bowen, he allegedly "ran outside into the backyard and began screaming" and threw a lighter at her.

Bowen allegedly told Hyland that she should leave the house as she was no longer safe around Propkop.

Following the end of their relationship, Hyland claims that Prokop "relentlessly bombarded me with vile, threatening and emotionally disturbing texts and voice mails including his own suicide threats".

He was reportedly admitted into rehab in August but left on 21 September. The actress claims that doctors at the institute advised her to seek a restraining order against him due to his mental state.

A judge consequently ordered that Prokop must stay at least 100 yards away from Hyland and her dog at all times.
